Cruise Description

7 Night Cruise sailing from Regensburg to Cologne aboard A-Rosa Flora.

It’s like travelling through 1,000 years of history. Just as you are contemplating the heroic tales and atrocities documented by the castles and ruins of the enchanting Middle Rhine Valley, new towers – ones without parapets – spring up on the riverbank. The financial city of Frankfurt proudly flaunts its skyscraper skyline, the only one of its kind in Germany. A vibrant atmosphere welcomes visitors to this economic centre. Art-lovers could easily spend a week exploring the museums on the city’s south bank. Despite the hustle and bustle, the people here are extremely open. Visitors will notice that the “sch”-sound features heavily in their accent. The river carries travellers onwards towards the Main-Danube Canal and back into the more rustic beauty of wonderful, venerable old cities like Würzburg, Nuremberg and Regensburg. Austria and the Danube are drawing near. And you are pulled between an urge to keep travelling and a longing to linger on in the tranquil Engelhartszell.

Highlights of this cruise:

Regensburg is a city of outstanding historic significance. The authentically preserved medieval character of the old town allows Regensburg since 2006 to hold the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other tourist attractions in the city are its churches, architectural monuments, museums and galleries.

Würzburg is the capital of the government district of Lower Franconia with 122, 000 inhabitants. The city is located on the flat right bank overlooked by the huge Marienberg Fortress surrounded by vineyards. The city and the Marienberg Fortress were occupied and plundered by the Swedish Army in the Thirty Years´ War. But this time of destruction was followed by a “Golden Age” under Prince-Bishop Philipp von Schonborn, who embellished Würzburg with splendid buildings and churches that can still be visited today.

Frankfurt is known for its “Manhattan skyline” with the Messeturm (convention tower) which is the highest building in Europe. The old imperial city is one of the most important trading and economic centres in Germany. Many important banks and the most important stock market are situated in Frankfurt. Frankfurt was the birthplace of J.W. v. Goethe and its many universities, theatre and museums provide a diversified cultural life.

Cologne, the old Cathedral city, is also one of the most important traffic hubs and commercial centres in Germany, with world famous trade fairs and a busy shipping traffic. Cologne developed out of a Roman colony and looks back on a history of more than 2000 years. In the Middle Ages it was one of the leading towns in Germany. The Second World War destroyed most of the inner city; these parts were rebuilt in a modern style. The landmark and emblem of the city is the Cathedral, a masterpiece of High Gothic architecture and one of the largest cathedrals in Europe. Other tourist attractions are the town hall, the Malakoff Tower, the St Martin Church and the old abbey.
